ABOUT

History

The Phi Lambda Delta came into being in the year 1969, when eleven women of the University of the Philippines College of Medicine, felt the need to bring together minds that refused to be encased into the mold of rigidity and convention that the ordinary female student finds herself within. Our founders, Anet Bernabe, Anet Velasco, Helen Mendoza, Celia Genio, Maggie Cruz, Mel Lazaro, Beng Toledo, Zenda Garcia, Teng Ynares, Nemy Pecson, and Lita Barros held the first meeting at 1693 Ma. Orosa St. that paved the way for a sisterhood that blossomed and endured. They named the sorority the PHI LAMBDA DELTA, which stands for “Fellowship of Lady Doctors.” A gold rose and Aesculapius against a dark blue background with the Greek sorority name across the center were chosen as the identifying insignias.

The first year saw the Sorority’s flame not only growing brighter, but also blazing under the outstanding leadership of the earliest Superior Sister Exemplar, Sis Thelma Javier Yambao, Phi 1969. Many from the different classes joined the sorority, increasing our number and strength. Hand in hand with our brother fraternity, the PHI KAPPA MU, the sorority fought hard for college recognition; until finally, the much-Awaited official recognition was granted on November 20, 1969. In no time at all, the sorority was acknowledged in the College, and proved worthy by being active members in the school community.

Every year, new sisters are welcomed to the fold. In our 55 years, we have produced over a thousand outstanding lady doctors, occupying prominent positions and spanning different fields of specialization—both in the Philippines and around the world.
